In 1855, the City of Norfolk was struck with a yellow fever epidemic when the captain of an American steamer ignored the quarantine of the port authorities and pumped the ship’s bilge water into the Elizabeth River. At the height of the epidemic, between 50-80 people died each day. Despite the dangers, eight Sisters of the Daughters of Charity, who had come to Norfolk in 1839 to operate the St. Mary’s Orphan Asylum, offered to nurse the ill and dying door-to-door and in make-shift hospitals. A wealthy patron of the orphanage, Ann Plume Behan Herron, opened and donated her home to the Daughters of Charity to use as a hospital. The Hospital of St. Vincent DePaul, Norfolk’s first public hospital, was incorporated by the Virginia Legislature on March 3, 1856. As the Sisters’ mission expanded, they added a clinic for the poor in 1892 and started a training school for nurses in 1893. In 1939, the need was recognized for a large, more modern facility. The hospital purchased land at the corner of Granby Street and Kingsley Lane and constructed a new building. The new facility, named DePaul Hospital, admitted its first patients in May 1944. Throughout its long history, DePaul Medical Center maintained a strong commitment to meeting the needs of patients from throughout the region. On November 1, 1996, the sponsorship of DePaul was transferred from the Daughters of Charity to the Bon Secours Health System. With the transfer, the facility was renamed Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center.
