Patients will check-in at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center the morning of their surgery. Pre-surgical processing will take place, which will include starting an IV line. Special pneumatic devices will be applied to the patient's legs to help prevent blood clots from forming. Medications to prevent blood clots will be given at this time. The pre-operative preparation usually takes about 30 minutes. The patient will then be ready for transport to the operating room holding area.
The operating room staff will verify completion of all necessary documentation and perform a final check of surgery preparations. The patient is then taken to the operating room. Once the patient is under anesthesia, a tube is placed in the patient's bladder to drain urine. It will be removed the following day.
The operation takes one and a half to three hours in most cases. Laparoscopic procedures require five inch incisions. An open procedure incision extends from the breastbone to the belly button of the abdomen. Excessive bleeding and use of transfusion products are very unusual.
After the operation, the patient is taken to the Step-Down Unit.
