David D. Spencer, D.O., F.A.C.S.

David D. Spencer is the medical director for Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center and is a surgeon with Tidewater Surgical Specialists in Chesapeake. Dr. Spencer is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. He has led the development of the multi-disciplinary team and the comprehensive surgical weight loss program. Dr. Spencer has performed more than 700 gastric bypass cases predominately using minimally invasive, or laparoscopic, surgical techniques. His outcomes in gastric bypass surgery are the best in the region, and surpass national standards.

In 1983, he earned his Doctor of Osteopathy from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internship at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and his residency at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Calif. Dr. Spencer joins Bon Secours Surgical Weight Loss Center after 20 years in the U.S. Navy. He most recently served as staff surgeon and Division Head of Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

He currently holds academic appointments with the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine and Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, and the International Federation For The Surgery of Obesity.
