Frequently Asked Questions
What is EAP?
The Employee Assistance Program is a FREE, CONFIDENTIAL service for
employees, their immediate family members and significant others. Seeking to
help individuals with a full range of personal problems, the EAP is intended
for assessment and referral or short-term problem resolution.
Will anyone know if I use EAP?
A vital part of EAP is confidentiality. An EAP counselor does not discuss
your situation with supervisors or family members, unless you give written
permission to release specific information
Would My Job Be Jeopardized if I Admit to Having a Problem?
NO! In fact, if you have a disrupting problem, your job is more apt to
remain secure if you seek and get the help you need to resolve it.
Who May Use EAP?
EAP is for all employees, immediate family members and significant others.
What Does It Cost?
The services of the EAP counselor are free to eligible participants.
However, when referrals to community resources and/or private practitioners
are made, the employee must pay for any costs not covered under his/her
insurance program.
How can I make an appointment?
For scheduling appointments call us toll free @ 1-800-EAP-3257 or (757)
398-2374 from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Assessment and
counseling sessions will be held at times and locations throughout Hampton
Roads, convenient for you and/or your family.
When Can I Call?
For life threatening situations call anytime--24 hour a day, 7 days a week.
If a situation is not life threatening, but you wish to speak with a
counselor as soon as possible, please relay that information when you call.
Would It Be Better to Tough It Out? Maybe I'm Just Being Weak....
That's like having a toothache and not going to the dentist. Everyone has
personal problems from time to time and deserves confidential help.
What goes on at the EAP if I decide to call?
A trained counselor will make an appointment with you. When you come in, the
counselor will talk with you privately about what is worrying you.
Talk? Why pay to talk?
You won't pay. Sometimes a wise and trusted friend can help, but often
that's not enough. You may need a professionally trained person to help you
"dig out" what's really bothering you, a skill your friend probably does not
have.
How can just talking help me with my problems?
When you are talking to someone who has professional training and has helped
many others with problems similar to yours, that person is able to see
patterns in your life that have led to your unhappiness. Once you are able
to recognize those patterns, you and your counselor can work on ways to
change them.
