Norfolk's First Public Hospital Prepares for Renovation and Renewal
Founded as St. Vincent DePaul Hospital in 1856, Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center is preparing for the future, with extensive renovations underway.
Moving forward with the support of Norfolk's elected officials and civic leaders, the plan for a new DePaul Medical Center is currently being reviewed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Good Help to Those in Need® is more than new, 21st-century facilities and leading-edge medical technology. The experienced caregivers of DePaul are refining the health services that matter to its Norfolk and Virginia Beach patient communities.
History of DePaul
In 1855, at the height of the yellow fever epidemic in Norfolk,
eight sisters of the Daughters of Charity, who had come to
Norfolk in 1839 to operate the St. Mary's Orphans Asylum,
offered to nurse the ill and dying. A wealthy patron of the
orphanage, Ann Plume Behan Herron, opened and donated her
home to the Daughters of Charity for use as a hospital. Norfolk's
first public hospital, The Hospital of St. Vincent DePaul,
was incorporated by the Virginia legislature in 1856.
By 1939, the need for a larger more modern facility resulted
in the purchase of land at the corner of Granby Street and
Kingsley Lane. The new facility, named DePaul Hospital, admitted
its first patients in May 1944. On November 1, 1996, the sponsorship
of DePaul Hospital was transferred from the Daughters of Charity
to the Bon Secours Health System and it was renamed Bon Secours
DePaul Medical Center.
