The hospital which became Mary Immaculate Hospital was originally built at the turn of the century by Dr. Joseph Buxton in the eastern part of Newport News. Dr. Buxton's son, Russell Buxton, who wanted to dedicate himself to his surgical practice, was persuaded by Bishop Ireton to turn over the hospital to the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters. The Bernardine Sisters, Third Order of St. Francis, had established their mission in Pennsylvania after coming from Poland in 1894. They assumed sponsorship of the hospital in 1952 and renamed it Mary Immaculate Hospital. In the late 1970s, the Sisters began making plans to relocate the hospital to an area where more healthcare services were needed. By the early 1980s, the hospital opened its present campus in the Denbigh area of Newport News. On November 1, 1996, through a joint venture arrangement, Mary Immaculate Hospital became a member of the Bon Secours Health System.

The 115-bed St. Francis Nursing Center is adjacent to the hospital. The Mary Immaculate Community and Health Resource Center provides meeting space for community educational programs and hospital-sponsored support groups. Our campus includes the Mary Immaculate Medical Pavilion, Denbigh Medical Center, St. Francis Nursing Center, the Community Education and Health Resource Center and the Parcourse Fitness Trail.
