Liver Institute of Virginia

As recently as 20 years ago, treatments for liver diseases were few. Today, liver medicines and liver treatments significantly improve the quality of life for patients, resulting in greater control of disease, higher cure rates, and fewer side effects.

Dr. Mitchell Shiffman, our liver specialist and expert on the treatment and care of liver diseases in Virgina and his core medical team have an extraordinary reputation for helping patients living with Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, fatty liver disease, liver cancer and primary biliary cirrhosis, as well as other diseases of the liver.

Additional Liver Health Services:

  • Hepatitis vaccination
  • Pre-transplantation care and coordination
  • Management of chronic liver disease

A leader in liver care, Mitchell Shiffman, MD and his staff have developed long-standing relationships with pharmaceutical companies, and experience in clinical trials management, to their patients’ benefit. At Liver Institute of Virginia, clinical research positively influences outcomes for individual patients, allowing them to receive therapies that are not available for prescription.

Dr. Shiffman is a nationally and internationally known presenter to peer audiences on liver medicine topics, including treatment protocols, chronic liver disease management, and pre-transplantation care. Patient education is an equal priority: look for seminars, screenings and The Liver Institute’s participation in Bon Secours health events.

The Liver Institute of Virginia, a part of the Bon Secours Health System, opened for patient care on March 22, 2010. After taking several months to organize his new practice, Dr. Mitchell L. Shiffman is now seeing patients and providing medical care for all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. This includes treatment for all forms of chronic viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and its complications, hepatocellular carcinoma, and care before and following liver transplant.

The mission of the Liver Institute of Virginia is to offer the best and most comprehensive care for patients with liver disease. Our goal is to educate patients about the disease that is affecting their liver and the various treatments. We offer patients the newest and most effective treatments for liver disease by participating in clinical trials.

The Liver Institute of Virginia is located at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News. The office is conveniently located and only a 60-minute drive from Richmond, Va.
