Strokes can come on quickly and without warning. After a stroke, every second counts. Thankfully, good care is just right around the corner at any of the Bon Secours facilities throughout Hampton Roads. With our new “No Wait” policy, you or your loved ones will be seen, evaluated and treated within minutes of arriving in our Emergency Department.
Statistics show that 50% of patients who are seen within a three hour window experience little to no physical or speech deficit. However, since the window starts closing when the patient was last seen in a normal neurological condition, quick identification of stroke is essential. Just remember to act F.A.S.T
- Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of their face droop?
- Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Can the person repeat what was just asked correctly?
- Time. Call 911 immediately if the person shows any of these symptoms.
Preventing a Stroke For Good
You can prevent a stroke by following some guidelines and making lifestyle changes.
- Stop smoking or, better yet, don’t start. Smoking doubles your risk of having a stroke. Avoid second hand smoke whenever possible.
- Eat a heart-healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, high-fiber foods and grains, olive oil and fish. Watch your intake of salt.
- Talk to your doctor about a safely exercising. A goal of two and a half hours a week will help you stay on track.
- Determine a healthy weight for you and then make positive changes that help you reach that goal.
- Get your blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Know your numbers and get regular check- ups to track your progress.
- Limiting alcoholic beverages to one per day for women and two per day for men greatly lowers your risk.
- Talk to your doctor about a daily aspirin regimen.
Most important of all is to develop a relationship with your doctor and your health care facility to ensure that you have all the tools and support you need to stay healthy and stroke-free!
