BON SECOURS HEART INSTITUTE SPONSORS
SECOND ANNUAL MEDICAL SYMPOSIUM
(Portsmouth, Va. – June 15, 2006) – Bon Secours Hampton Roads announced today that the second annual medical symposium presented by Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Bon Secours Heart Institute will be held Saturday, October 28, 2006. Options in the Interventional Management of Heart Disease is the title of the symposium that will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth. For a complete list of faculty and to register, go to http://www.bshr.com/cardiac/symposium/faculty.html or call 889-CARE.
“Our partnership with Columbia University brings not only clinical innovations and new technologies to Hampton Roads,” said Richard A. Hanson, CEO Bon Secours Hampton Roads, “but also high caliber cardiac education to the medical community.”
The symposium is a one-day educational event that will guide the physician through the state-of-the-art interventional management of cardiac disease. The program is designed to encourage interaction with the faculty through panel discussions and question and answer sessions. Physicians and cardiac clinicians throughout Virginia and North Eastern North Carolina are invited to attend.
“Improvements and advancements in the surgical and interventional treatment of cardiovascular disease have shown measurable success in the improvement of the quality and length of life of individuals with cardiac disease,” said Joseph S. Auteri, M.D, medical director of the Bon Secours Heart Institute. “This course will focus on the interventional and surgical approaches within the spectrum of cardiovascular disease appropriate for these treatment options.”
The goals of the symposium include, providing data to allow objective decision-making regarding the care of patients with ischemic heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and congenital heart disease; recent advances, trials and studies in the treatment of heart failure; discussing the clinical and diagnostic tools in the recognition and interventional management of congenital heart disease in the adult and child.
The first annual Medical Symposium sponsored by the Bon Secours Heart Institute and Columbia University was held last October. The symposium provided CME credits for physicians in a variety of cardiology-related areas.
The Columbia University partnership enables patients to receive the latest treatments in heart care and access promising new treatments through clinical trials. Bon Secours physicians can consult with heart experts and share best practices. Eric A. Rose, M.D., of Columbia University, serves as clinical director of the Bon Secours Heart Institute, providing a direct link to Columbia’s resources for quality review, clinical practice guidelines and ongoing staff development. Dr. Rose’s colleague, Craig Smith, M.D., who was the surgeon of choice when President Clinton needed bypass surgery, serves as Columbia’s liaison with the Bon Secours Heart Institute medical director, Joseph S. Auteri, M.D.
