Portsmouth, Va. (July 13, 2007) – Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center’s partner, New York Presbyterian-Columbia University, which has brought enhanced cardiac services to Western Hampton Roads, was just ranked by U.S. News & World Report as sixth in the nation for its heart and heart surgery programs, up from 8th in 2006. The hospital is also the only hospital in New York to make the exclusive national "Honor Roll," a distinction reserved for those centers that received very high rankings in at least six specialties.
Bon Secours Heart Institute, affiliated with the Columbia University Department of Physicians and Surgeons, opened in November 2005 to bring enhanced technologies and open-heart surgical services to the Hampton Roads region.
Robert F. Dunton, MD, FACS, medical director of Bon Secours Heart Institute said, “Western Hampton Roads has one of the highest incidences of stroke and heart disease. By working with Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Bon Secours Heart Institute has been able to bring world-class cardiac care to the region.”
About Bon Secours Heart Institute
Bon Secours Heart Institute was established to bring open-heart surgery to the people of western Hampton Roads and meet a pressing health care need. This region is not only one of the fastest growing in our area, but is also home to people at high risk for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases. Western Hampton Roads ranks highest for cardiovascular disease and death in an eight-state region. In the past, hundreds of these residents had to leave their own community each year to receive open-heart surgery — but no longer. Bon Secours Heart Institute provides heart patients the highest quality cardiac care consistent with the “best practices” of Columbia University, with whom we are affiliated.
