Bon Secours Physician Selected for Virginia Physician Leadership Institute

Newport News, Va. (January 11, 2008) – Ibe Mbanu, MD, MPH, has been selected as one of 20 Fellows for the second class of the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSVF) Claude Moore Physician Leadership Institute. Dr. Mbanu is medical director of the Mary Immaculate Hospital OccuMed Center in Newport News.

MSVF, through a five-year grant from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, established the Physician Leadership Institute in 2006. This yearlong program is one of only a handful in the nation that is devoted to providing physicians with formal, ongoing leadership training. The goal of the Institute is to produce a network of physician leaders who work individually and together to effectively advance health and health care in Virginia.

Dr. Mbanu serves as chairman of the Ambulatory Medicine Department at Mary Immaculate and participates in several committees at the hospital. He is an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Mbanu was also recently granted Diplomate status by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Occupational Medicine).  At Bon Secours, his division specializes in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He works with more than 200 Virginia companies to help manage their employees’ healthcare by providing clinical care and workers’ compensation consultations.

He did his fellowship training at Harvard in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is also board certified in Internal Medicine. He received a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan, his medical degree from Wayne State University, and two bachelor’s degrees, in Chemistry and Cellular & Molecular Biology, from the University of Michigan.
