MAKING A SPLASH AT BON SECOURS
DEPAUL MEDICAL CENTER
NORFOLK, Va. (November 16, 2005) - Is that a new mermaid
on Granby Street? Mermaids are folkloric sea creatures that
Norfolk has adopted as a symbol of the city.
As part of the Norfolk’s Mermaids on Parade, Bon Secours
DePaul Medical Center is adding its own mermaid, La Sirène
de Mission, and you can see her on Granby Street, between
Kingsley Lane and the Emergency Department entrance.
“We felt this was the perfect opportunity to continue
with our celebration of 150 years of service to the communities
of Norfolk,” said Susan Erickson-MacLeod, Executive
Vice President and Administrator for Bon Secours DePaul Medical
Center. “This is something our employees have been excited
about as well.”
The hospital held a “Name Our Mermaid” contest
for employees, and Tim Short, program director of inpatient
rehabilitation, submitted the winning entry, which means “Mermaid
of Mission” in French.
Bon Secours DePaul commissioned local artist Georgia Mason
to create the hospital’s mermaid. La Sirène de
Mission will be unveiled on Monday, November 21, 2005, at
11:00am.
