Maryview Foundation Healthcare Center
Awarded Grant by the Virginia Health Care Foundation
RICHMOND, Va. (January 20, 2006) Portsmouth, Virginia now has a new option to serve the large number of uninsured adults who lack access to primary care, thanks in part to a $76,050 grant from the Virginia Health Care Foundation. The Maryview Foundation Healthcare Center provides free care to uninsured residents of Portsmouth. Although referrals will be accepted from area physicians, it is expected that many of the clinic’s new patients will be those who presently use Bon Secours Maryview’s Emergency Department for non-urgent care.
In addition to full-time nurse practitioners and a part-time medical director, volunteer physicians will also provide care. Dr. Amy Price, the medical director, has high hopes for the new center. “We strive to provide the highest quality health care to
these patients who have previously had to rely on the Emergency Department.” The clinic will be located adjacent to Bon Secours Maryview’s Emergency Department, and provides medical, pharmacy, and limited specialty services.
This grant award is one of 11 health safety net grants to non-profit healthcare organizations totaling $950,067 recently announced by the Virginia Health Care Foundation. These grants will expand the ability of many uninsured and medically underserved Virginians to receive primary health care services.
