THE FRIENDS OF BON SECOURS MARYVIEW
ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Portsmouth, Va. (June 22, 2006)- The Friends of Maryview through Bon Secours Maryview Foundation recently announced the awarding of $6,000 in scholarships to support three local students for the 2006 - 2007 academic year. Recipients of this scholarship must have a parent or guardian who is a part-time or full-time employee of Maryview.

Selection was based on academic achievement, community references, and an essay written by the applicant explaining his/her desire for obtaining an advanced academic degree.

The following scholarship awards have been made:

$2,000 TO SHANNON LASSITER, a Newport News, Virginia resident and daughter of Linda Lassiter, care manager at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Shannon is a graduate of Peninsula Catholic High school in Newport News has been accepted at the College of William & Mary. Shannon ranked fifth in her graduating class. While excelling academically, Shannon also played two varsity sports, served as Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, and volunteered at the Portsmouth Public Library. Shannon was the American Legion Auxiliary Samsung Scholarship National Finalist for Girls State 2005, president of the National Honor Society, and recipient of numerous honors awards, as well as the President's Academic Excellence Award.

$2,000 TO STEPHEN ADAMS, a graduate of Windsor High School and resident of Windsor, Virginia and son of Bonnie Adams, employee of Bon Secours Maryview's laboratory. Stephen will attend Longwood University in the Fall.
Stephen is an Eagle Scout and a member of both his Boy Scout troop and Venture Crew. He is also a member of the Isle of Wight Ruritan Club and church youth group. Stephen was a member of the Windsor High School Academic Bowl team, the Latin Club, the Art Club, and the track and field team. Stephen plans to pursue a career in chemical engineering.

 

$2,000 TO CATHERINE WHITE, daughter of Carol White an employee in the perioperative care center at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View, graduated from Western Branch High School in Chesapeake. She has been accepted at the University of Virginia, where she will study Business Law at the prestigious McIntire School of Business. From there, Catherine plans to pursue a law degree. Catherine is a member of the National Honor Society, has won first place in the Tidewater Forensics League, and was chosen Best Director for 2004-05 school year. She has volunteered at Vacation Bible School and the Harbour View Surgery Center, and she has painted with her church youth group.
The Bon Secours Maryview Foundation is dedicated to the philanthropic support of the programs, people and mission of Bon Secours Maryview. Our mission is to provide health care services to those in need, especially the poor and dying, for the joint purposes of alleviating human suffering and affirming the meaningfulness of human life in the midst of pain and loss.
