MARY IMMACULATE HOSPITAL NURSE RECEIVES GLOWING LAMP AWARD

(Newport News, Va. – June 2, 2006) – Sharon Jones, a registered nurse at Mary Immaculate Hospital, was presented with the Glowing Lamp Award by Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., a national sorority of registered, professional nurses’ and nursing students. Jones was recognized at an award luncheon held last month at the Murray Conference Center in Norfolk hosted by the local Chi Eta Phi Sorority. Proceeds from this event benefited the organization’s nurses’ scholarship fund.

The award is given to nurses who have made outstanding contributions in the delivery of health care in their community. Jones is currently a faith community health ministry coordinator at Mary Immaculate Hospital. She trains and mentors registered nurses to become faith community nurses. She assists them in starting, maintaining and growing the health ministry within their churches. Jones is part of Bon Secours’ regional network which serves over 75 churches throughout Hampton Roads.

Sharon Jones Jones was instrumental in starting a health ministry at Faith Deliverance Baptist Church in Newport News. She is currently a member at Bethel Temple Assembly of God in Hampton where she strives to educate, motivate, and empower people to become whole spiritually, mentally, socially, and physically.

Jones received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Hampton University where she graduated with honors. Prior to that, she earned her diploma in nursing from the Riverside School of Professional Nursing. Jones has completed a parish nursing preparation course and a parish nursing coordinator course program at Shenandoah University. Prior to joining Mary Immaculate Hospital, Jones served as the parish nurse coordinator for Riverside and the Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center in Newport News.

Jones is a member of Kraft Elementary School’s PTA, the Minority Health Coalition of South Hampton Roads, the Cancer Prevention Coalition, the National Health Ministries Association, and the Virginia Health Ministries Association Chapter. She is a native of Newport News and is married to Lorenza Jones, Sr. They have two children, Mariah, 7 years old and Lorenza Jr., 11 years old.

Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., consists of over 8,000 registered nurses and nursing students in graduate and undergraduate chapters throughout the United States, District of Columbia, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and Liberia West Africa. Guided by the motto "Service for Humanity", the Sorority has programs focusing on health promotion/disease prevention, leadership development, mentoring, recruitment and retention and scholarships.
