DR. CARL WENTZEL JOINS MARY IMMACULATE HOSPITAL AS MEDICAL DIRECTOR, EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
(Newport News, Va. – November 16, 2006) – Carl Wentzel, III, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., has joined Mary Immaculate Hospital as medical director of the emergency department. As medical director he will collaborate with staff, administration and other department leaders to continuously improve patient and physician satisfaction, to improve quality of care and enhance processes to improve patient through-put. Dr. Wentzel is part of TeamHealth, the national emergency care provider that has recently affiliated with Bon Secours Hampton Roads to provide emergency physician services at its facilities.
Dr. Wentzel received an undergraduate degree in Biology and English from the University of Richmond in 1983. He earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1989 and completed his residency training in emergency medicine at
the University of South Carolina, Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C., in 1992. Since that time, he has practiced emergency medicine in several community settings.
Most recently, Dr. Wentzel served as medical director at John Randolph Medical
Center in Hopewell, Va., from 2004 to 2006. He also served as an attending physician in the emergency department there from 2001 to 2004. Prior to that, he was an attending physician in the emergency department at Sentara Hampton General Hospital from 1992 to 2001, serving as medical director there from 1997 to 2000.
His professional activities include serving as a board member of the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians since 1998 and a member of the College’s Executive Committee in 2006. He also serves on the Virginia Trauma Center Site Review Team, as a Course Director for the Virginia Operational Medical Director Curriculum, and as State Medical Director of the Basic Trauma Life Support Curriculum. Dr. Wentzel has also served as medical director for several community public safety organizations, including the Charles City County Volunteer Fire Department/EMS, Prince George County EMS Agency, Crater EMS Council and the City of Hampton Fire/EMS, and is currently serving on the Virginia Governor’s Advisory Board for EMS.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wentzel has been very active serving the community. In 1997 and 1998, he was named Outstanding Operational Medical Director by the Peninsula Emergency Medical Services Council. Also, in 1998, he received the Virginia Governor’s Award for Outstanding Operational Medical Director and a Commendation
for Community Service from Hampton City Council. Between 1994 and 2000, he participated as a team physician on eight Operation Smile International medical missions. Since 1993, he has also served as a staff physician for Camp Sea Gull, a YMCA summer camp for boys in North Carolina. Dr. Wentzel is married and lives with his wife and four children in Yorktown.
