The center is located on the Bon Secours Health Center at
Harbour View campus and provides many services including an
outpatient surgical center, endoscopy center and a new anorectal
physiology center.
Colon and rectal surgeons at the center offer comprehensive
care for patients suffering from diseases of the colon and
rectum. We specialize in surgical and non-surgical treatments
for each individual patient. Always sensitive to the needs
and anxieties of every patient, the center provides the latest
diagnostic and therapeutic services to deliver state-of the
art care. Working collaboratively with other physician specialists,
the board certified colon and rectal surgeons are part of
a multidisciplinary team of medical experts recognized for
clinical, as well as academic expertise.

Minimally Invasive Procedures / Innovative
Technology
Bon Secours Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases offers patients
the option of minimally invasive treatments. Bon Secours Maryview
Medical Center is a leading area hospital in minimally invasive
colon and rectal surgery, which offers a much less painful
alternative to traditional open surgery. In addition, patients
have a much shorter hospital stay and return to normal activity
much quicker.
Ray T. Ramirez, MD, medical director of the Bon Secours Center
for Colon and Rectal Diseases, has extensive experience and
specializes in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery.
Minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery uses specially
designed surgical tools, including a lighted tube with magnifying
camera called a laparoscope. This device allows surgeons to
view inside the body with enhanced clarity while live images
are sent to a monitor positioned in the operating room. The

offering diagnostic and treatment options for pelvic floor

In addition we offer endorectal ultrasound for preoperative
staging of rectal cancer. All these services are provided
by a courteous and dedicated staff and overseen by a nurse
coordinator and the medical director. Patient convenience
is of utmost priority.

The Colon and Rectal Cancer Program has been specifically
designed for patients diagnosed with colon and rectal cancer.
We developed our program to give our patients immediate
access to a comprehensive continuum of care that will expedite
their diagnosis, treatment, and post-operative care. Our
surgeons specialize in sphincter
preserving surgery for rectal
cancer and minimally invasive colon resection.

Genetic Testing
Bon Secours Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases now offers
genetic counseling to support the needs of the patients
and physicians in our community. We offer cancer risk assessment
and coordination of genetic testing for hereditary colon/endometerial
cancer. These services have become an increasingly important
component of medical evaluation for individuals with a personal
or family history of cancer.
