If you're considering joint replacement surgery, or if you've already made the decision to have the procedure, you can rest assured that the staff at Mary Immaculate Hospital is ready to help you every step of the way. Our team of dedicated professionals provides exceptional care necessary to fully heal and recover from a joint replacement procedure and to help you get back to enjoyable
activities such as playing golf, swimming, bowling and bike riding. They are fully trained and focused completely on helping you and other joint replacement patients undergo a positive experience.
What are my options for dealing with joint pain?
If you suffer from joint pain, you should attend on of Mary Immaculate's seminars, titled Joint Pain and Current Health Care Options. This seminar is free and offered on a regular basis. You can call 886-6700 to learn more about the seminar and to register. If desired, we can also suggest an
orthopaedic doctor for you to visit. After a thorough examination, the doctor will discuss
your options with you. If surgery is not indicated at the current time, the doctor may prescribe outpatient physical therapy, home exercise and/or medications.
How do I prepare for surgery?
Mary Immaculate offers a Pre-Op Joint Replacement Course that provides opportunities for you to meet with the health care professionals who will be helping you and your family before, during and after the procedure. This comprehensive three-hour program is held on the first and third Thursdays of
each month, from 9 a.m. to noon. You'll meet with a pharmacist, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, care manager and dietitian. You will receive important tips to help you prepare for all phases of your hospital stay and recovery. You'll have ample time to ask questions and to see the equipment you'll be using during rehabilitation.
What happens during the hospital stay?
Three to five days is the average length of stay for people who receive a joint replacement. Each morning, you'll receive a newsletter with your breakfast that describes your schedule for the day and also provides educational information about your surgery and recovery. Before your discharge, be sure to walk our historic trail and compete in a putting tournament.
How long is the recovery period?
Before leaving the hospital, our staff will advise you on exercises to continue at home. Gradually, you'll be able to increase your level of activity and begin playing golf, swimming, bike riding or other activities within 12 weeks. Each person recovers differently, but you will use a walker for about four weeks after the operation. You may then begin using a cane for another four weeks, or
until you no longer require any assistance devices. Your care manager will provide you with all of the information you'll need and organize each step of your recovery.
Remember, there are many steps you can take to fully prepare for joint replacement surgery, but the most important is attending the Joint Replacement Pre-Op Class. This class is your best preparation for what you and your family can expect during the hospital stay and after you return home.
